Assembly Chart: the Staff Chart

The assembly chart of the General Staff map: reflection of the 19th century

Created at the instigation of Napoleon to replace the Cassini map, the General Staff map was, as its name indicates, produced by the French army. Thanks to more modern survey techniques, the General Staff map of France gives a more accurate vision of France in the 19th century. The survey work lasted from 1818 to 1900.

Characteristics of the General Staff map assembly chart

• The General Staff map is made up of 274 sheets.
• The sheets are numbered from 1 to 267 (some have bis or ter) from West to East and from North to South. The first map is therefore that of Calais (n°1) and the last that of Sartène (n°267).
• Each sheet is named after the most important city.
• The General Staff map was produced at a scale of 1:80,000
• Certain variants should be noted, notably the Type 1889
