The complete collection of the Cassini Map: a world first

Bouxières-aux-Chènes - Winter 2025

On the occasion of the European Heritage Days, Votre Carte Ancienne created quite an event in Bouxières-aux-Chênes by recreating a spectacular premiere: the Cassini Map displayed in its entirety.

Spread out on the floor of the village hall to form a monumental assembly measuring 12 by 12 meters (nearly 150 m²), this installation allowed the public to take in the 18th-century Kingdom of France at a single glance. As the country's first major general geodetic map, the work revealed the landscape of the past with fascinating precision: parishes, forests, mills, and waterways.

Echoing this giant fresco, the exhibition also presented very rare antique maps of Lorraine, as well as a retrospective of 60 maps illustrating the cartographic evolution of the territory from the 16th century to the present day.

A true success for the curious and heritage enthusiasts alike, transforming the rediscovery of our territorial history into an extraordinary visual and immersive experience.
