Vintage illustrated map of the world, produced as a Sugoroku (Japanese snakes and ladders) board by the Osaka Mainichi Shimbun (Osaka Daily News) in 1925. This document is not a conventional map but a game, titled in Japanese "家庭教育世界一周すごろく" (Katei kyōiku sekai isshū sugoroku - Educational Sugoroku of the World Tour for Family Education). The route is depicted as a winding path connecting various localities. Although not drawn to scale, it is oriented with the east at the top and is centered on the Ural Mountains region. It extends to encompass Europe, the Mediterranean, North Africa, East Asia (China, Korea, Japan), India, Australia, and the Americas. The map is a charming visual work, richly decorated with numerous picturesque vignettes that express the Japanese fascination with Western culture, technology, and customs of the Taishō era. These illustrations include famous landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower in Paris or stereotypical cultural representations of different regions. The object of the game is to start from Japan (the furi-dashi, starting point) and travel around the world, returning to London (the agari, finishing line) before returning to Japan. This document, published by a major Japanese newspaper, is a fascinating historical record of the beginnings of globalization and Japanese iconography of the time. The map measures 106.68 cm by 77.47 cm
