This vintage map of the Chicago Zoological Park, better known as Brookfield Zoo, is a charming pictorial work by Ralph Graham, the zoo's in-house artist and photographer, created between 1945 and 1965. Published in the late 1940s, this map highlights the zoo's innovative approach, as it was one of the first to use moats and ditches rather than cages to separate enclosures. The drawing teems with colorful details: a multitude of animals are depicted in a stylized manner, including elephants, rhinos, giraffes, kangaroos, and bears. Even the famous Indian rhinos Kashi Ram and Kamala Rani are featured. The map also illustrates park life with its visitors, parking lots filled with vintage cars, picnic areas, and tree-lined walkways. In the center, a decorative compass is adorned with primates. This poster is a fascinating testament to the history of zoology and graphic design in the mid-20th century in the United States. The map measures 55 cm by 39 cm.
